While 20km offshore is the world famous Frigate Pass. Only a short boat ride from Matanivusi Surf Resort, are three right hand reef breaks that, depending on the wind, tide and swell, can offer the experience of a life time. Board shorts can be worn year round, a rashie and sunscreen are needed for sun protection and booties are optional for the reef. Recommended surfboards would be a ‘hotdog’ short board and a larger semi-gun for the bigger days. For this reason surfers need to be competent and confident. The surf at Frigates Passage (which is all outer coral reef and overhead high) can be challenging for inexperienced surfers. During the winter season, the SE trade winds which are offshore at Frigates can blow very strong (20-25 knots) for up to a week at a time. This is the time when the local breaks fire up. The cyclone season from December to April is associated with shorter swells, however the conditions could be called ‘tropical’ as it is glassy or light winds all day and extremely hot with afternoon showers. One is from April to October when the low pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere produce consistent ground swells which can get up to 8 to 10’. There is surf all year round in Fiji, but like anywhere else cannot be guaranteed. Air New Zealand and Fiji Airways have regular flights to Nadi.Bottom Type: Reef - Variety from mellow to hollow Most camps will pick up from the airport, reducing the transport hassles. If you intend travelling in the peak months it is well worth booking accommodation in advance as all the camps can be full. The main season for surf in Fiji is our winter months, however, like New Zealand they get surf year-round. Both of these resorts have access to some very consistent surf breaks. There is also a surf camp on Yanuca Island – Frigates Reef Camp – and off Kadavu Island – Nagigia Island Surf Resort.

The infamous Cloudbreak, Namotu lefts, Swimming Pools and Wilkes Pass – all world class surf breaks. Namotu Island is Fijis world class destination for water and sports experiences with easy access to Fijis premiere surf. Both resorts are located on their own island and are located right on three of the main breaks in the area. Two of the most well known surf resorts/camps in this area are Tavarua and Namotu Resort. Access to the main surf breaks in this area is by boat with a couple of options on the mainland. The outer islands off Nadi in the Mamanuca island chain hold some amazing breaks. There are number of areas where surf is accessible, the two main areas being on the south side of Viti Levu on the Coral Coast an outer islands, and the outer islands off Nadi.
There are two main islands of Fiji, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Fiji is one of the closest destinations to New Zealand and a very good country for surf.
