In the original series, Thomas was based on a London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) Class E2 0-6-0T, particularly the second batch of locomotives built with extended side-tanks, built between 1915-1916. He simply wants to be the best little #1 tank engine he can be. He's always willing to upkeep a “Thomas Promise” and works hard to make up for any mistakes he's made. Thomas is a cheeky but hard-working engine who is always there to help his friends. He also seems to view Gordon as a father figure. His best friends are Percy, Diesel, Nia and Kana the five share a roundhouse together called Tidmouth Sheds.
